So, the long and the short of this is, I have dedicated winters on my OEM donut-spec 15 inch wheels right now, and for the summer I want to get a set of larger wheels and tires, preferably 17's or 18's. I have a connection through a friend where I can get 18" SSR Type C's that are mint for $1700CAD (says he's flexible on the price, and hasn't listed them for sale yet) with some 235/35/18 tires with 75% tread left. Now, for my car, the sidewall would be too small on those tires and I'd prefer to get 235/40's to match the OEM tire diameter. My thought process is that I can try and bring the price of the wheels down a bit, and then sell the tires that are on there, and buy a new set (which my parents will generously help me with).

I really like the wheels a ton, and I know they're of great quality ($700 each brand new, again, in CAD). But my whole dilemma lies on whether or not its worth the hassle of selling the tires (or, more worryingly, if I'll be able to sell the tires at all.) If I can haggle the set down to $1400-1500, I'm hoping I can sell the tires for 100 a piece, leaving me at 1000 for the wheels, which is where I wanted to be at most in this case. I know if I got the exact wheels I wanted, I wouldn't mind spending a bit more, but ideally I'd still like not going too over budget.

Also, I could keep them for a long time, and if I take good care of them, I could probably sell them for the same price, or, alternatively, use them on my next vehicle (I'm talking about you, BRZ). But, I have my concerns. I wouldn't necessarily regret it, but I'd just want to know I made the right decision. Thoughts?

Don't get anything that will scrape the wheel wells. Keep it within budget and sizing.

Whatever tires you get, make sure that the total tire diameter is OEM spec. If your car originally came with 15" wheels, you're gonna have to have extremely low profile tires on the 18" wheels, unless you want to recalibrate your speedometer and transmission mapping.

Oh, and possibly have to get an entirely new transmission because the bigger wheels have effectively shortened your final drive ratio and now all of the gear ratios are FUBAR'ed and you can't find a gear where you can drive at highway cruising speeds without redlining or bogging.

Have you checked the fitment on your car yet? Keep it rub-free.

Based on reccomendations from the friend who hooked me up (who has the same car and had the same suspension setup as me) said they should be perfect. The person who is selling the wheels will let me test fit however.

I always check that. My OEM tires (205/65/R15) are a great match for 235/40R18's, with just a 0.3% height difference.

I use this tool to do the math for me. http://www.rimsntires.com/specspro.jsp

That won't be the case. Tires will be matched to OEM diameter.

I wish I could be that awesome. Budget doesn't allow me to be that awesome.

I have no idea about selling used tires, but if you think you can sell them i would go for it.

You should be able to sell those tires. I just sold the stock all seasons (195/65r15) that came on my cars last week on Kijiji for $320. There are always people looking for cheaper low profile tires.

Oh, if you're looking for new wheels/tires and Toyota makes anything you like, check at the dealer and ask for sets taken off a new car. That's what I just did for my summers, brand new wheels and 225/45r17 tires, delivery miles, $1000 tax in.

Being able to sell the tires is a good thing to hear, that'll bring the price down of the wheels a decent amount for me.

And I never knew that! That's a great idea, I'll look into it for sure; I actually like the Camry's stock 18's.

Yeah, it's a good deal. The new owner decides they don't want the wheels that will come with the car so the dealer gives them a credit toward new [aftermarket] wheels for the original ones and sells those wheels to someone else, like me, to make back that credit and I guess a bit more. It's much cheaper than buying those wheels new/oem from the dealer, the new owner gets different wheels for less and the dealer makes a buck as well. Good deal all around.

Toyota has had some sharp wheels recently so I'd say it's definitely worth a look. I don't know if your car has the same bolt pattern but I know a lot of FR-S owners ditch the stock wheels so you might ask at a Scion dealer if you like those wheels as well.

I have a Camry, but the bolt pattern is the same as the tC, and maybe a few owners have ditched those wheels as well. I'll check it out this weekend.
